Can Your Ukrainian Adopted Child Be Drafted Into The Ukrainian Army?

The fighting in eastern Ukraine has claimed over 3000 Ukrainian lives.

On August 2014, Ukrainian’s national security council ordered the reinstatement of mandatory conscription in response to what seems to be a full-scale conflict in the eastern part of the country.

The draft, affecting able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 25, is the latest indication that the Ukrainian conflict is rapidly intensifying. With Ukraine’s mandatory military service, many adoptive parents of Ukrainian may be worried if their sons are at risk of being drafted. The answer is a clear NO.

Children adopted from Ukraine no longer have such obligations under Ukrainian law. They are not permanent citizens of Ukraine. As such, they cannot be called to serve in the Ukrainian military. When the consul in NYC was asked for comment, his answer was “definitely not!”.

This is not a new policy either. This has always been the case for children adopted from Ukraine. They will never be subject to any Ukrainian draft.

So, no need to worry. However, do keep those in Ukraine fighting in your thoughts and prayers.
